Consider an application accepting form submissions behind a gateway. The team is working on proxy trust boundaries, and the important result is that origin checks and client identification follow the documented proxy boundary. This guide explains how to turn that outcome into a reviewed implementation, using a forwarded-header policy to connect the business task, the technical decisions and the evidence needed before release.
The scenario is illustrative. Its reference identifiers and review records are sample inputs for discussing the workflow. Use your own authorized records, constraints and responsibilities when applying the approach.
Start with the actual problem
The immediate risk is accepting spoofed forwarding values as if they came from the configured gateway. That failure can remain hidden behind a successful demonstration because a demonstration usually follows one clean sequence with one person and fresh data. A useful plan also explains what happens when information changes, a request is repeated, permission is missing or part of the task cannot finish.
Write the intended outcome in plain language before choosing the implementation. For this topic, the outcome is that origin checks and client identification follow the documented proxy boundary. Ask the responsible reviewer what evidence would make that statement believable. Identify the record, interaction or operational check needed to establish the behavior. Keep the evidence tied to the task people will actually perform, including its recovery and correction paths.
Define the workflow and its boundary
Use the forwarded-header policy to describe three boundaries: what the user is trying to accomplish, what the system is allowed to do, and what another person or system owns. These boundaries prevent a small change from quietly assuming authority over unrelated information. They also make scope discussions more concrete than a broad promise to make the application smarter or faster.
Describe the normal input, the expected result and at least one condition the workflow must handle differently. Keep the terms consistent between the interface, the implementation notes and the acceptance examples. A label that changes meaning between those places creates avoidable confusion during development and support. When a definition remains uncertain, give the question an owner rather than burying it inside an implementation assumption.
A worked example to review together
Imagine the team reviewing reference EX-071 for an application accepting form submissions behind a gateway. The initial review packet contains the purpose, the four decisions below and the expected acceptance result. A second reviewer receives the same packet without the original author explaining it in person. This tests whether the work is understandable enough to be implemented and maintained by the team.
| Review field | Example value |
|---|---|
| Topic | proxy trust boundaries |
| Shared artifact | forwarded-header policy |
| Reference | EX-071 |
| Initial state | Prepared for review |
| Main risk | accepting spoofed forwarding values as if they came from the configured gateway |
| Acceptance evidence | origin checks and client identification follow the documented proxy boundary |
Start with a small representative example rather than all historical records or every possible feature. Repeat the review with a changed input and an exceptional condition. A useful difference should have an explained consequence; it should not be silently normalized into the same successful result. Record what the example establishes and which questions remain outside its scope.
Four implementation decisions
Decision 1: Define which gateway may supply trusted forwarding data
The concrete decision in this workflow is to define which gateway may supply trusted forwarding data. Apply it to an application accepting form submissions behind a gateway, using the forwarded-header policy as the shared reference. The people implementing the change and the people accepting it should be able to describe the same result. An attractive screen or a successful isolated command is insufficient evidence when the underlying workflow still has an unresolved condition.
A deployment package should make its assumptions visible. Identify the application process, its runtime configuration, its persistent data and the services it depends on. Separate build-time settings from runtime secrets. An image should be reproducible from its source and dependency lock files, while private credentials remain outside it. A developer’s working machine can hide missing files or accidental dependencies; exercise the packaged application in the environment that will actually run it.
For this example, record the decision next to EX-071 rather than leaving it in a private conversation. Include the reason, the responsible owner and the condition that would require revisiting it. That record connects this step to the guide’s acceptance target: origin checks and client identification follow the documented proxy boundary.
Decision 2: Use the public origin for request checks and absolute links
The concrete decision in this workflow is to use the public origin for request checks and absolute links.
Availability depends on the complete request path. A healthy application process still needs a reachable database, working routing and the correct public origin. Health endpoints should distinguish a process being alive from the dependencies required for serving useful work. Avoid publishing detailed internal diagnostics through a public endpoint. Verify the proxy path, forwarded headers and application origin together, especially when public and administrative applications run as separate services.
For this example, record the decision next to EX-071 rather than leaving it in a private conversation. Include the reason, the responsible owner and the condition that would require revisiting it. That record connects this step to the guide’s acceptance target: origin checks and client identification follow the documented proxy boundary.
Decision 3: Avoid trusting arbitrary client-supplied identity headers
The concrete decision in this workflow is to avoid trusting arbitrary client-supplied identity headers.
Persistent state needs explicit ownership. A container can be replaced, but the database records and user-generated assets often need to survive. Decide which directories are temporary and which are backed by durable storage. Write down how a release interacts with that storage and which actions would remove it. A cleanup command should target a known purpose rather than treating all volumes, images and processes on a shared machine as disposable.
For this example, record the decision next to EX-071 rather than leaving it in a private conversation. Include the reason, the responsible owner and the condition that would require revisiting it. That record connects this step to the guide’s acceptance target: origin checks and client identification follow the documented proxy boundary.
Decision 4: Verify direct and proxied requests separately
The concrete decision in this workflow is to verify direct and proxied requests separately.
Operations become dependable when another person can repeat them. Record the exact deployment entry points, rollback conditions, health checks and backup procedure. Assign ownership for routine maintenance and urgent failures. Measure application behavior after release rather than relying only on the build result. Logs and metrics should explain which component is affected, while private configuration and unnecessary customer details stay out of the operational output.
For this example, record the decision next to EX-071 rather than leaving it in a private conversation. Include the reason, the responsible owner and the condition that would require revisiting it. That record connects this step to the guide’s acceptance target: origin checks and client identification follow the documented proxy boundary.
Failure modes and recovery
The failure to investigate first is accepting spoofed forwarding values as if they came from the configured gateway. Reproduce it with safe sample information, then observe the actual interface and stored or documented outcome. Check whether the underlying result agrees with the message. A rejected operation should not leave an unexplained partial result, and an accepted operation should remain discoverable according to its workflow.
Describe the next safe action when the condition occurs. The correct action may be a bounded retry, a correction, a renewed permission check or an authorized manual review. It should follow the meaning of the operation rather than an automatic habit of trying everything again. Keep useful user input when possible and keep diagnostic information available to the responsible team without placing sensitive values into public error messages.
Verification before rollout
Use the acceptance target as a concrete check: origin checks and client identification follow the documented proxy boundary. Give that check an input, an expected observation and a reviewer. Run it on the packaged or deployed environment that will actually be used. Differences in configuration, access or data can change behavior even when the source code is identical.
| Verification case | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|
| Ordinary workflow | The intended outcome and its authoritative reference |
| Changed input | The reviewed consequence of the meaningful change |
| Missing access or required information | A useful rejection without an unrelated effect |
| Interrupted or repeated step | The documented recovery behavior and resulting state |
| Handover to another person | A reproducible result using the same review packet |
Keep the evidence small enough to understand. A concise example with clear observations is more useful than a large log file that nobody can interpret. If a check fails, explain the condition and decide whether the boundary, the implementation or the acceptance definition needs correction. Do not change the expected result merely to match an unexplained outcome.
Ownership after the first release
Assign an owner for the forwarded-header policy and another responsible role for operational follow-up where needed. The two roles may belong to the same person in a small team, but their responsibilities should still be distinguishable. The implementation owner can explain a design decision; the operational owner knows what to do when the released workflow does not meet its acceptance condition.
Document how the team will notice a failure, locate its reference and decide the next action. Preserve the reviewed examples so later changes can be compared against the original meaning. When new requirements arrive, update the boundary and the acceptance evidence together. A maintained workflow should be able to evolve without making previous decisions impossible to explain.
A practical decision checklist
Before calling this work complete, review these questions with the people responsible for it:
- Can everyone explain why proxy trust boundaries matters to this workflow?
- Does the forwarded-header policy identify a clear boundary and an accountable owner?
- Have the four decisions been reviewed against representative inputs?
- Is there an explicit response to accepting spoofed forwarding values as if they came from the configured gateway?
- Can another reviewer establish that origin checks and client identification follow the documented proxy boundary?
- Are the recovery and handover instructions consistent with the released behavior?
Use unanswered questions to guide the next small piece of work. A workflow that is easy to demonstrate may still contain unclear ownership or recovery behavior. Make those conditions visible before expanding the feature.
Continue with a bounded next step
Start by preparing the forwarded-header policy for one representative workflow. Review the decisions, demonstrate the expected outcome and retain the evidence. Expand when the first boundary is clear enough for the team to maintain.
